CNN reported that during a press conference held this evening (September 12, Vietnam time), Governor Cox declared:
“We got him. A family member of Tyler Robinson contacted a friend, who then reached out to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and provided information that Robinson had confessed — or at least implicitly admitted — to committing the act.”
A law enforcement official stated that it was Robinson’s father who recognized him from photos published in the media. He urged his son to turn himself in and also called a youth pastor for support. The pastor then contacted the police, and the suspect was arrested.
The Governor of Utah added that Robinson’s roommate had shared with investigators a chat log from the group messaging app Discord, in which the suspect talked about retrieving a rifle. The roommate also opened Discord and allowed investigators to take screenshots of messages as they appeared.
Governor Cox explained in detail:
“The messages related to Tyler Robinson included references to retrieving a rifle from a drop point, leaving the rifle in some bushes, messages about visually monitoring the location where the rifle was placed, and one message mentioned leaving the rifle wrapped in a towel… The messages also referred to a scope and a one-of-a-kind rifle. Messages from the user Tyler Robinson also mentioned changing clothes.”
FBI Director Kash Patel stated that Robinson was arrested at 10:00 PM local time on September 11 in Utah.
“In under 36 hours — precisely 33 hours — thanks to decisive action by the federal government and support from state partners in Utah and Governor Cox, the suspect was arrested in this historic timeframe,” Patel said.
According to Patel, the FBI reviewed evidence and followed up on more than 11,000 leads.
